Most entry level varieties offer one loudspeaker under GBP200, but the TSx range has a smaller variation retailing at GBP100, as well as two: these TSx220B standmounters. Three floorstanders are also in the lineup, as are two center loudspeakers for anybody looking to make use of the variety to get a home cinema setup.

The crossover uses more complex parts, like Mylar bypass capacitors (Polk says this helps create a comprehensive treble). This range also sees curved cupboards being introduced. The organization maintains this also helps reduce unwanted standing waves in the carton, resulting in a clearer sound, and makes for a much more rigid construction.

The 220Bs appearance fine - the carton's distinctive contour and tasteful 'cherry' vinyl wrapping on our sample gives an enforcing atmosphere to get a sub-GBP200 loudspeaker (they are also accessible black oak).

The Polks are enormous: 32cm deep and 37cm tall. They may present an issue for all those short on space, particularly considering they seem balanced away from a back wall. They are heavy and as solid as they seem - we had enjoy edges and the sharp corners round-away somewhat.

Move to seem and we are amazed (though not extremely surprised, considering their size) at how large and strong-sounding the 220Bs are.

Flutes soar, as well as the instrument has only enough separation to avoid the demonstration sounding congested.

There is considerable bass and great low end expansion also: drums rumble and trombones are deep seated. A lot of bass could mean a tradeoff for agility and speed, which is the case here, with the Polks lacking. Dynamics need subtlety and more force, also. Vocals have focus and great clarity, but the TSx220Bs can not relay Prince's snappiness.

Finally, the Polks rely on muscle first impressions and scale to impress. Sadly for them, class competitors offer a polished performance all round.
